Michael Norton’s experience
Yesterday afternoon 13/01/2010 we drove to Benson in a whiteout. As we rounded a bend an AA van and a car had ditched in artic conditions. The car contained three Indians, who said they had slept the night in the car after ditching the previous evening. As we were in a Landrover Discovery equipped with a winch, we tied the disco to an ash tree and winched their car back onto the ice-road. We were unable to pull out the AA van. We went to the local pub for a pint, the rescued drivers had that morning knocked on a door to borrow a shovel, they had been given breakfast too, they now returned the shovel. We drove back up the hill to the AA van, now a tractor tried to pull it out unsuccessfully. Then an AA recovery landrover using two winches, also tied to the ash tree was successful. A very exciting place Benson. Apparently the other day it was the coldest place in England minus 17 one of the locals told us.
